You will love these pins!  They look like solid metal, but they are feather-light metal coating on clay.  Each pin weighs less than 1 ounce!  These metallic pins are exceptionally strong, unique, and- of course- handmade.

Both the shawl pins and kilt pins are 2.5 inches diameter.  The shawl pin has a 2.5 inch solid brass wire catch, and the kilt pin has a 2 inch catch made out of a lighter-gauge solid brass wire (see photos).

How do I make these pins?  First, I make my Red Hills Clay™ (see below).  Clays are screened and cleaned to remove unwanted debris, then proportioned and mixed thoroughly.  After shaping the design, I air-dry it before bonding a layer of bright powdered metal- copper, bronze, brass, silver, or pewter- onto the clay.

After cooling, the metal is treated so that it develops a natural patina.  This takes a couple of days.  Then, the pin is given a soapy warm water bath, towel-dried, and vigorously hand-rubbed to bring out a soft satin glow.

I keep a small selection of  pins on hand; however, made-to-order pins can require up to 6 weeks for construction and delivery, so order yours today!

Red Hills Clay

The Red Hills Region is a unique 300,000-acre (515.6 sq mi) area of the southeastearn United States comprised of overlapping parts of southwestern Georgia and northwestern Florida.

The soil is red clay from the Apalachian Mountains that was deposited here during the last ice age.

The Red Hills Region has the largest concentration of undeveloped plantation lands in the US, and the Nature Conservancy has designated the Red Hills as one of America's "Last Great Places."
