These eco-friendly art pieces are litterally made in the spirit and in the flesh of the Gulf coast beaches, marshes, and estuary from which they come!
I make these unique and original art jewelry pieces out of two local materials: oyster shells, and my Red Hills Clay™.
Oyster Shell Mosaics™ are made of the shells from world-famous Apalachicola Florida oysters. I wash the oyster shells, pulverize, grind, sift, sort, size, re-wash, dry, and dye them. The shell bits are arranged into a mosaic design.
I cut, shape, sand, and polish the mosaic by hand. Then I fabricate a solid brass setting, and fit the mosaic into the setting.
My Red Hills Clay™ jewelry is made just like I make the shawl pins and kilt pins. Clays are screened and cleaned, then proportioned and mixed. After shaping the design, I air-dry it, and bond a layer of bright powdered metal- copper, bronze, brass, silver, or pewter- onto the clay. After cooling, the metal is treated so that it develops a natural patina. This takes a couple of days. Then, the pin is given a soapy warm water bath, towel-dried, and vigorously hand-rubbed to bring out a soft satin glow. Some of the clay designs are fit into frames that I fabricate out of either solid brass, or copper.
I keep a small selection of these on hand; however, made-to-order pins can require up to 6 weeks for construction and delivery, so order yours today!
Portions of these proceeds benefit the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association, Apalachicola Riverkeeper, and the Apalacicola Area Chamber of Commerce.

Red Hills Clay
The Red Hills Region is a unique 300,000-acre (515.6 sq mi) area of the southeastearn United States comprised of overlapping parts of southwestern Georgia and northwestern Florida.
The soil is red clay from the Apalachian Mountains that was deposited here during the last ice age.
The Red Hills Region has the largest concentration of undeveloped plantation lands in the US, and the Nature Conservancy has designated the Red Hills as one of America's "Last Great Places."
World-famous Apalachicola Oysters
Apalachicola Bay oysters have a reputation among chefs across the US as being some of the finest tasting oysters available. They hold their flavor after cooking and are prized for their plump, meaty texture, mellow flavor and balanced salt content. No other area in the U.S. offers "wild harvest" oysters of this quality.
